Quotes for January 5, 2008

Today I’m using quotes from our 35th President, John F. Kennedy. I was almost 11 years old the day he was assassinated, and still I remember that day clearly. Even at that young age, not knowing about politics at all………….I felt a tremendous sense of loss. Something inside me, even then, didn’t believe the stories I was hearing on the TV news about it. To this day, I have trouble believing that story. In finding these quotes, I’m beginning to see why now.

My favorites are bolded, but the last two, I think, are the most important. The last one in particular speaks loudly about what is occurring today:

Tolerance implies no lack of commitment to one’s own beliefs. Rather it condemns the oppression or persecution of others.

Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Every time that we try to lift a problem from our own shoulders, and shift that problem to the hands of the government, to the same extent we are sacrificing the liberties of our people.

There is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger than an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment.
