When Ideology Rules over Real Science

A growing trend these days is “Science by Press Release” (examples here, here and here). The success of this with smoking has rapidly expanded to other areas. The numbers are always similar, the ‘crises’ is similar, the costs are similar. It’s as IF they just took the anti-smoker playbook and changed a few words and slightly adjusted a few numbers to apply the propoganda/ideology into other areas. We are now witnessing this being directed to those who are overweight and obese.

It’s pretty sad when announcements are made and results advertised before the supposed studies (and they are rarely brand spanking new studies) are actually peer-reviewed by UNbiased sources and published.

What’s worse is when they actually make these announcements without even READING the ‘study’. The former Surgeon General, Richard Carmona, did that also. His 2006 so-called report on Smoking and Second-hand smoke, used OLD studies and if you took the time to browse the 727 pages
behind his press release, you would notice that 85% of the conclusions at the end of each chapter did NOT support his announcement. In other words, the man LIED and abused his position to push his own personal hatred of smokers. Didn’t you wonder why he ‘retired’ so quietly 2 weeks later? And he now has is sites set on the overweight and obese.

The latest I found on the Junkfood Science blog:

Missing evidence or… They really do just make stuff up!

Last week, fat women were being advised to exercise 55 minutes a day to lose weight and keep it off, even though the study being reported had found that no amount or intensity of exercise worked to maintain weight loss. Today, new public health guidelines have stepped it up, calling for 1 ½ hours a day of moderate-vigorous exercise, as well as two weight training sessions a week, for all overweight adults.

It would appear, however, that no one actually read the ACSM position paper because the expert authors could find no evidence to support recommendations of exercise for weight control.

As Scotland On Sunday reports:

The same thing is being done also with ‘global warming’.

“Global warming has now got to the stage where it is only maintained by media self-censorship. If the general public ever got to know of the scandals surrounding the collection and processing of data, or that there has been no detectable warming for the last decade, the whole movement would be dead in the water; but they don’t, so it isn’t. It has become the most powerful myth in human history, sending much of the world into a downward helix of economic decline. It is a tenuous hypothesis supported by ill-found computer models and data from botched measurement, dubiously processed.” John Brignell – brilliant! A must-read!

March of the zealots

Puritanism – The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.
H L Mencken

Every age has its dominant caste. This is the age of the zealot. Twenty years ago they were dismissed as cranks and fanatics, but now they are licensed to interfere in the every day lives of ordinary people to an unprecedented degree. When Bernard Levin first identified the new phenomenon of the SIFs (Single Issue Fanatics) many of us thought it was a bit of a joke or at most an annoyance. Now the joke is on us. In that short time they have progressed from being an ignorable nuisance to what is effectively a branch of government. They initiate legislation and prescribe taxation. They form a large and amorphous collection of groups of overlapping membership, united and defined by the objects of their hatred (industry, tobacco, alcohol, adiposity, carbon, meat, salt, chemicals in general, radio waves, field sports etc.) Their success in such a short time has been one of the most remarkable phenomena in the whole of human history.

This quotation says it all:

Imagine telling somebody twenty years ago that by 2007, it would be illegal to smoke in a pub or bus shelter or your own vehicle or that there would be £80 fines for dropping cigarette butts, or that the words “tequila slammer” would be illegal or the government would mandate what angle a drinker’s head in an advertisement may be tipped at, or that it would be illegal to criticise religions or homosexuality, or rewire your own house, or that having sex after a few drinks would be classed as rape or that the State would be confiscating children for being overweight. Imagine telling them the government would be contemplating ration cards for fuel and even foods, that every citizen would be required to carry an ID card filled with private information which could be withdrawn at the state’s whim. They’d have thought you a paranoid loon.

I encourage you to read the whole story, it is quite interesting.

The road to hell is always paved with good intentions, and I wish all these busy-body control freak nannies would just light up a cigarette, eat some french fries and donuts, have a beer and leave the rest of us sensible, normal, free-thinking people alone.

  1. Well, you said it..and well! Great Post!! I’m personally tired of all the nannying going on around here that seems to add the need for more taxes and fines that go into the unknown abyss we call government. Given all the figures of these monies, and yet we can’t seem to help but fall into even bigger deficits and debts. And somehow, all that money being thrown at issues has yet to fix anything but “not quite full enough” pockets somewhere. I’d like these policy-imposing morons show us one iota of evidence that any of it has actually caused a measurable amount of help toward any actual solution to their so called “problems of humanity.”
BTW- found your page via the Godfather at theslowbleed.com

  2. Glad you enjoyed it Mike! Nice to know that I make sense, at least some of the time……..LOL We’re on a fast track to becoming the USSA…..our founders must be spinning in their graves to see how we’re losing the freedom and liberty they tried to set up for all here.

I’m also happy to hear how you found me. I enjoy theslowbleed.com even though I don’t comment there often!
